Real-Life MDA: Solving Business Problems with Model Driven Architecture
the OMG Press, by Michael Guttman, John Parodi
One of the 6 MDA case studies presented in this book is the project Pant@™ of Coopservice,
for which Soluta.net provided architectural directions and leadership. The Pant@™
chapter contains interviews to Walter Siri the Project Manager of the project and
Pierfranco Ferronato of Soluta.net.
Review
"The need for this book—No one has published a similar compendium of MDA case studies,
making a transition to new technology is not simply a technical affair, although
many of us tend to overlook this point, and the authors are superb writers. These
are people who have seen a lot in the industry and have a gift for articulating
important trends."—David Frankel, consultant and author
Book Description
Although it is based on many long-standing industry precepts and best practices,
such UML, it is enough of a departure from traditional IT approaches to require
some "proof of the pudding."
Real-Life MDA
The book is composed of a dozen case studies of real companies using MDA
that will furnish that proof. The authors' approach MDA projects by describing all
aspects of the project from the viewpoint of the end-users—from the reason for choosing
an MDA approach to the results and benefits.
The case studies are preceded by an introductory chapter and are followed by a wrap-up
chapter summarizing lessons learned.
In the final chapter, drawing from the case study experiences, the authors make
the business case for the use of MDA; they describe the business “pain points” that
are amenable to an MDA approach and how they are addressed by specific MDA characteristics
such as separation of concerns, traceability of requirements to implementation and
deployment, stakeholder communication, and agile and iterative development.
Case
Studies Described
State of Ohio Job and Family Services / Compuware:
Ohio’s Job and Family Services organization uses MDA to fulfill
a Federal mandate to implement a statewide Child Welfare Information system.
Coopservice / Soluta.net:
A leading Italian company in the Facilities Management Industry uses MDA to
rationalize its IT infrastructure and supply chain, while creating a B2B portal
as the “integration point” of choice for cooperative projects.
Austrian Health Authority / Select Business
Solutions: An Austrian government social services agency incorporates
MDA into its software development process, in order to integrate the IT infrastructure
of its distributed sub-organizations, and to standardize and enforce its technical
architecture.
Harris Corporation / Inherit LLC:
A Telecom/IT company uses MDA to improve and speed up the process by
which its product can be tailored to the needs of individual customers, and plans
to provide its downstream customers with both the models and the know-how to tailor
the application to fit their own requirements.
General Services Administration / Data
Access Technologies: A large US Federal Government organization
creates an “executable architecture” that allows models to interoperate with existing
systems, and finds that MDA’s separation of concerns is a perfect fit for the Federal
approach to software development.
Daimler Chrysler TSS / Interactive Objects:
A major player in the auto industry uses MDA to build a support
system for all processes within production plants, replacing 10 legacy systems and
leveraging existing architecture and infrastructure, while “model driven offshoring”
aids organizational integration with remote development partners.
